The Hideout Guest Ranch is an upscale guest ranch, located in the little hamlet of Shell, Wyoming (population 50), at the entrance of the majestic Shell Canyon and Big Horn National Forest in North-Central Wyoming. Wyoming’s nickname is the “Cowboy State,” and it’s no wonder. This beautiful region is filled with wilderness areas and a true Old West feel.

Wyoming dude ranches live up to the Cowboy State name in every way imaginable. Accommodations and the level of service at The Hideout Guest Ranch make this guest ranch more like a boutique than your typical ranch. With two culinary schooled chefs the food is Western gourmet style and always something to remember. Most of The Hideout's riding and activities staff is year-around, which makes them very personable and experienced with the area. Experienced and non-experienced riders will feel at home here there are miles and miles of trails to ride on private, National Forest and BLM land in a variety of scenery.

When it comes to riding this is not a nose to tail ranch. Guests have the opportunity to participate in an authentic working cattle and cowboy experience with cattle drives round-ups, and branding.

Colorado Trails Activities

When you think of a dude ranch, does your mind immediately conjure a picture of someone on a horse? Do you think of Billy Crystal’s old movie, City Slickers, and assume you’ll be roping cattle and birthing calves?

At Colorado Trails Dude Ranch, we do have horseback riding, but there’s also so much more you can do at our dude ranch and around the area besides riding horses and fly fishing. Here’s a peek at four other activities at or near our guest ranch that you and your family are sure to enjoy.

1. For the History Buff: Mesa Verde National Park Colorado Trails Ranch offers a day trip to Mesa Verde National Park for a small additional charge guided by Jeanne, the ranch manager. Jeanne has been guiding the Mesa Verde trip for more than 20 years and loves to share her knowledge. The park includes some of the most well-known and best-preserved Puebloan ruins in the nation. Not only are the Mesa Verde ruins a national treasure, they’re also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The more than 600 cliff dwellings at Mesa Verde were inhabited by the Ancestral Puebloan people, an ancient Native American tribe. Tourists visit the site each year to explore the cliff dwellings for themselves.

2. For the Train Buff: Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Train Ride The narrow gauge train in Durango has been in continuous operation for 130 years. Originally constructed to haul gold and silver ore, it wasn’t long before people started flocking to the train line just for the view itself.

Old-fashioned steam engines continue to grace this authentic 19th century train line. The Durango & Silverton train ride trip is not included within the program at Colorado Trails Ranch. What many of our guests do, however, is to arrive a day early or stay a day late to explore this nearby attraction.

3. For Everyone Who Loves to Dance: Night at the Opera House One of the most enjoyable evenings at Colorado Trails for both kids and adults is the night at the Opera House when our professional caller and skilled staff teach everyone about square dancing and other types of Western dancing. With lots of laughter as guests work to learn the square dance steps, the night of dancing at the Colorado Trails Opera House is one of the best-loved evenings of any Colorado Trails week.

4. Wet ‘n Wild: Power Tubing and Whitewater Rafting Colorado Trails provides towels and transportation for those who want to go on a whitewater rafting trip down the Animas River with professional guides. Power tubing on Vallecito Lake is another water sport that the teens especially enjoy. These four activities are just a sample of what Colorado Trails and Southwestern Colorado has to offer. Other activities besides our horseback riding and fly fishing include active, outdoor adventures such as hiking, horseshoes, archery, trap shooting, swimming, volleyball and far more.

At Colorado Trails, we make it our mission to ensure that no visitor to our guest ranch is ever bored. We think you’ll agree that even if you came back to Colorado Trails with your family year after year, you’d never run out of things to do. From the Colorado Trails Digest

11/26/2012 8:40:29 AM

RanchSeeker represents many great working guest ranches on our website. A working ranch is a ranch that has its own cattle operation with the herd managed by cowboys.

Most working ranches do not cater to guests, though some do offer guests the opportunity to see what a real working ranch is like and partake in horseback rides, cattle drives and other working ranch related activities. Other features offered by guest ranches could also be available. A working ranch vacation is a great way to live the life of a real cowboy if only for a week.

Burnt Well Guest Ranch is located in Rosewell, New Mexico and is primarily a working cattle and sheep ranch that takes in a few guests on the side as a supplement to their ranching income.
