Vista Verde Ranch Winter Escape

10/2/2017 7:54:13 PM

If you love to play in the snow and adore everything about the winter this year why not consider a vacation at Colorado’s Vista Verde Ranch located just outside of Steamboat Springs? Here, you will enjoy a true winter wonderland experience. As the temperatures drops and snow falls hideout in a deluxe lodge room or a peaceful, luxurious log cabin that range in size from one to three bedrooms. Each cabin features a living room, wood stove, and your very own private hot tub situated out on the deck which is ideal for stargazing on a clear, crisp wintry night.

When you do decide to poke your head outdoors you will find lots of exciting activities to choose from such as taking part in a traditional one horse sleigh-ride accompanied, of course, by a steaming hot cup of chocolate… could it get any better than that? But the fun doesn’t stop there, as you strap on some skis and try a variety of styles of Nordic skiing from classic to skate to back country. In addition there’s snow-shoeing, “fat” biking (bikes with wide tires that allow you to bike across snowy terrain) and snow tubing. And if that isn’t enough you can also take photography lessons, practice your downward facing dog, book a few spa treatments and take part in weekly cooking lessons and wine tastings.

If riding a horse through a blanket of fresh snow is on your bucket list then be prepared to cross it off! There is nothing like sitting astride one of Vista Verde’s magnificent horses with their warm, thick, lustrous winter coats and hearing the crunch of snow beneath their hooves while out on a winter’s day ride. Expect a slower paced excursion that lasts for an hour or so due to snowy conditions and colder temperatures. Whether you have ridden in the snow before or not this is an experience that should not be missed during your ranch visit.

Between adventures in the snow and downtime in either your private cabin or deluxe lodge room prepare to feast upon gourmet meals that balance “ranchy” with fancy ,which are served with perfectly paired wines that will impress even the most sophisticated palates at your table. Vista Verde’s Executive Chef Cholly McGlynn and his full staff of trained and experienced Chefs will happily accommodate any special dietary needs that you may have, if you simply let them know in advance.  With all the fresh air and time spent outdoors enjoying the varied activities available this is one vacation that you definitely won’t need to worry about counting calories.

Families looking for something different to do during Christmas and New Year’s will find that Vista Verde Ranch is the perfect choice to celebrate the holidays. Let the trained staff at Vista Verde take care of all the planning this year and simply show up and enjoy your all-inclusive winter vacation. For those who prefer adult-only vacation times, early January until mid-February are the dates for you. When President’s Day weekend comes around, the kid’s program kicks back into high gear and families are welcome once again through the ranch’s March Spring break weeks until it closes for the season when the snow starts to melt away.

With all the many options and activities to choose from once you get to Vista Verde Ranch, the only thing left to decide right now is what will you pack, when you want to go and with whom to spend your Colorado winter wonderland escape with this year? So what are you waiting for?

Winter Fun at a Guest Ranch

12/9/2016 11:24:54 AM

Winter is upon us and although the temperature has dropped considerably in many destinations it doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t consider adding a dude ranch vacation to your holiday plans. In fact, wintertime means that there are lots of new adventures to be experienced and enjoyed with friends and loved ones. Guest ranches are an excellent option to consider when booking your winter wonderland escape. Though several guest ranches do close down during this period there are many that stay open all year round and they offer a diverse range of activities to choose from. Also, keep in mind that some of the more southerly located ranches experience very mild winters and may be more suited to those who would rather avoid cooler temperatures and snow. Here are a few  guest ranches that offer winter snow vacation packages:

Crystal Waters Guest Ranch, Bridge Lake, British Columbia, Canada

When winter hits the region in late November the ranch is covered by a snowy blanket and it becomes a playground for winter enthusiasts. Guests who stay at Crystal Waters Guest Ranch during this time can choose from a list of fun outdoor activities or they can simply curl up with a good book in their private log cabin that resides on the shores of Crystal Lake. For those seeking to enjoy the outdoors there are snowshoes available which provides a wonderful opportunity to follow the tracks of the region’s bountiful wildlife. Fishermen will love the peace and quiet found sitting by a hole in the ice with their fishing pole and horse lovers will be thrilled riding through snow-powdered plains. Then, after a fun-filled day of exploring join other guests by a roaring fire and share the day’s experiences while sipping on a hot drink or perhaps take in a sauna.

Crystal Waters Guest Ranch

If you feel the need for speed you can bring your own snowmobile or let the ranch help you organize a rental to use during your stay. There are lots of exciting places to explore. Plus during the winter Crystal Lake provides a great surface for ice-skating or playing ice hockey. If you are looking for a more peaceful activity cross-country skiing and snowshoeing are an excellent way to explore this Winter Wonderland. Downhill ski enthusiasts and snow-boarders will love the close proximity of the ranch to Sun Peaks Mountain known throughout the world for its light, dry, “Champagne Powder.” Here you can also find Heli Skiing/Snow-boarding at its best! Plan on getting up early to make a day of it so that you can be back in the evening to enjoy sitting by the fire.

‘Tis the Season to Celebrate…A Very Merry Christmas at the Ranch!

12/2/2016 11:14:15 AM

The following article 1st appeared in Ranch & Reserve Magazine’s 12th issue

What better way to rediscover the joys of Christmas and experience a truly unique Christmas vacation than at a dude ranch.   A Christmas ranch vacation is an ideal opportunity for family, friends or couples to relax, recharge and reconnect with loved ones by spending active days and leisurely evenings together.

Western Ranches are well-known for their always warm welcome, generous hospitality and outstanding natural surroundings, especially during the Yuletide season when many ranches offer a special Christmas program replete with time honoured traditions and bygone Christmas customs.

“It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas!”

Imagine…. the luxury of feasting on a gourmet Christmas dinner prepared by a trained chef, in a beautifully decorated ranch lodge by a crackling log fire.

Imagine…. an old-fashioned, jingle bells ringing, Christmas sleigh ride, sipping hot mulled wine or schussing along glistening powdered snow in the pristine winter wilderness of a Colorado ranch resort.

Imagine…. soaking in a hot tub under crystal clear starry skies of old, at a ranch in the Arizona desert after an exhilarating day spent riding the range.

Imagine…….all this and so much more to be enjoyed during a Christmas ranch vacation at one of two stunning western locales.

Stagecoach Trails Guest Ranch

First stop is the Stagecoach Trails Guest Ranch, laid out like a small western town, located in the remote Mohave Desert, a two hour’s drive from Las Vegas in picture-perfect Wild West country of cacti, scrubland and barren foothills.

Christmas in the desert is an especially lovely time of year with moderate sunny days and cool nights.  The entire ranch gets decorated with Christmas lights and literally oozes an old-fashioned, down-home Christmas; horses have Santa hats and bells and miniature Christmas trees adorn every guestroom. There’s a guitar playing entertainer, White Elephant exchange gifts under the tree, delicious hearty Christmas fare and lots of good cheer for guests, whether mingling in the spacious timbered lodge or around a blazing campfire in the communal courtyard.  Moonlit wagon rides and unobstructed star-gazing evoke memories of a far simpler time when Christmas was something joyous to behold and shouts of Merry Christmas rang out to greet friends and strangers.

Ranch activities at Stagecoach Trails are designed to appeal to all ages and tastes, such as scenic horseback rides, rental ATV’s and fat tire mountain bikes to explore the sandy desert terrain, a popular petting zoo, archery and wild-life viewing.  Back at the ranch, a hot tub and heated pool soothe tired muscles while billiards and horseshoes are perennial ranch past-times.

Accommodations include comfortable one & two bedroom suites with private bathrooms for small or larger groups. Ranch hosts and owners, JP and Tricia McCormick, take great pride in offering guests an old-time fun-filled Christmas vacation with an authentic taste of the Old Wild West…. the stuff of magical Christmas memories to take back home.

Stagecoach Trails Guest Ranch

Next stop is the upscale, all-inclusive Vista Verde Ranch in Northern Colorado, 25km north of Steamboat Springs.  If your Christmas wish is to be indulged and pampered in a Norman Rockwell  type scenery, then Vista Verde fits the bill.  The pure-white winter beauty and bracing mountain air, create an enchanting Christmas wonderland evoking childish memories of frolicking in freshly fallen snow on long ago Christmas mornings.

Vista Verde Ranch

Christmas at Vista Verde is a rare delight and will surely be a cherished memory for years to come owing to its ultra-luxe ranch amenities, in-house spa massage and plushy comfort of well-equipped cabins with private hot tubs, as well as the many seasonal and exciting activities to keep everyone happy and healthy outdoors whether it’s horse rides along snowy trails, skiing, snowshoeing, snow tubing or Fat tire biking.  A kid’s program for younger guests is an extra bonus for parents, while other Christmas treats might be a dog-sledding expedition or a trip to the nearby famous Steamboat Springs ski resort. Adding to all the festive fun and Christmas cheer, log fires burn brightly, Christmas lights twinkle, mistletoe and holly hang from the beams, as guests help to decorate the many individual Christmas trees or enhance their cooking skills with a culinary class.  And no Colorado ranch Christmas would be complete without the thrill of “dashing through the snow, in a one-horse open sleigh!”

Vista Verde Ranch

However, the pièce de résistance at Vista Verde is surely the totally decadent, haute cuisine sumptuous Dicken’s style Christmas banquet. Guaranteed to satisfy even the most exacting gourmand, this celebratory meal ensures that by evening’s end, ranch guests and staff alike are filled with the merriest of Christmas cheer and in true Christmas spirit, table guests have become friends.

The Stagecoach Trails Guest Ranch and the Vista Verde Ranch, each with its own unique setting, contrasting winter activities and Christmas traditions, are just a sample of the many western dude ranches who offer a select Christmas program of winter-themed activities for the benefit and enjoyment of their guests.

Whatever one’s belief, Christmas continues to be celebrated around the world and thus remains a very special occasion to share with family and friends, with its age-old customs of hearth and home, loved ones gathered around the fire and familiar well-loved traditions.  No matter how one chooses to celebrate Christmas, be it a religious event or not, simple or extravagant or creating new memories at a western ranch, this heartfelt Christmas message never fails to resonate with the best in all of us, ”On earth peace, goodwill toward men”

And lastly in keeping with the Holiday Season,

Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good night!

Happy Trails!

A Thanksgiving Feast at The Ranch at Rock Creek!

11/9/2016 4:30:06 PM

The following article 1st appeared in Ranch & Reserve Magazine’s 11th issue

History tells us that the first American Thanksgiving occurred sometime during 1621, when the surviving Pilgrim Fathers gave thanks for a successful harvest, which was largely due to the help they received from the native Squanto/Wampanoag tribe, who were invited to sit down at the celebratory feast. Various versions exist as to why and how such an auspicious gathering took place including what food was actually served that day, and no doubt the meal back then differed greatly from what we all associate today as being a quintessential American Thanksgiving dinner.  It’s safe to assume however, that wild turkey, corn, in grain form for bread or for porridge, and venison was there.

In the years that followed, Thanksgiving Day began to be randomly celebrated by various communities, particularly in the north, until a writer, Sara Josepha Hale, made it her mission to have it formally recognized as a National Holiday, enacted by President Lincoln in 1863.

However, it wasn’t until 1939 that President Franklin D. Roosevelt proclaimed that the fourth Thursday of every November would become the official date to celebrate Thanksgiving.  This would not be approved however by Congress until 1941.  (source)

For the majority of American households these days, celebrating Thanksgiving sadly has lost much of its original meaning; instead, it often centers on the actual meal itself and the getting together of family and loved ones under one roof. It is still a time however to give thanks for all the good things we enjoy and for many that includes the opportunity to watch American football be it high school, college or NFL games throughout the day. Some families even engage in a friendly game of touch football before dinner. Volunteering at soup kitchens or holding food drives is another way for some to celebrate Thanksgiving. It is a way to give back to those less fortunate during the holiday season and as such some remnant of the true meaning still lives on.

Other modern traditions include attending Thanksgiving parades which are held in cities and towns across the United States. The biggest and most famous parade, which has been attracting millions of onlookers since 1924, takes place in New York City and is put on by Macy’s department store. Elaborate floats, marching bands, giant balloon figures and famous people are what over three million spectators on the ground and over fifty million people at home can expect from this year’s parade. Another fun tradition, with roots dating back to the beginning of the mid-20th century, includes the annual “pardoning” of one or two turkeys on behalf of the President of the United States. This quirky event spares the selected turkeys from the oven and sends them to a “retirement home”.

Thanksgiving is also a wonderful opportunity to pack a bag, book a short getaway, and let someone else take care of the cooking this year. With Christmas fast approaching a trip away can provide a much needed break before the frantic holiday season starts in December. Whether you choose to spend it with that special someone, family or your dearest friends, taking a vacation during this time is a memorable way to celebrate Thanksgiving. Although there are numerous destinations and types of vacations to choose from….. The Ranch at Rock Creek offers a truly unforgettable Thanksgiving experience.

Located in Philipsburg, The Ranch at Rock Creek, although surrounded by breathtaking scenery all year round, is particularly picturesque during the autumn months. Winter Dude Ranch Vacations

11/27/2014 11:44:02 AM

Enjoy the Cold Season in a Rustic Setting of a Dude Ranch

If you want to enjoy the beauty of winter in a setting different from home, you’ll be glad to know that dude ranches are open during the colder season. In addition to allowing you to watch the falling snow while cozying up with a loved one in front of the fire, ranches open in winter host a different set of winter activities like snow-shoeing, ice skating and horseback riding through snow. So if you’re sold to the idea of heading to a dude ranch this winter, here are three great options you should seriously consider.

#1) Echo Valley Ranch and Spa Nominated as TripAdvisor’s Traveler’s Choice, Echo Valley Ranch and Spa is nestled in the mountains of British Columbia. A few hours away from Vancouver, the ranch is an all-natural treat where Canadian wildlife grazes peacefully around and the mountain spring water reflects the same purity as the air. On the inside, the rooms are warm and comfortable while the exclusive Royal Suite promises privacy and total relaxation. However, if you’d rather stay at a cabin, you can take your pick from a number of unique types available at EV Ranch. If you’re in the area during winter, make sure to avail the Winter Ranch Vacation Getaway between December 12, 2014 and January 5, 2015.

Some of the great offerings of this vacation package include:

  • A glass of champagne or mulled wine on your arrival
  • Guided snowshoeing walks every day
  • Ice fishing at the nearest lake with the ranch’s own equipment
  • Cross Country skiing
  • Thai yoga stretching classes every day
  • Weekly Thai banquet and Thai dancing
  • Weekly cooking demonstrations For a minimum of $186 per person per night (Canadian $210), you’ll also get to use all the ranch’s facilities, including free Wi-Fi, a heated swimming pool, games room, Karaoke, and fitness center.

Echo Valley Ranch
Echo Valley Ranch

#2) Lone Mountain Ranch Established as a cattle ranch in 1915, Lone Mountain Ranch is part of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem in Montana. It was added to the National Registry of Historic Places, giving it a significant role in the history of the state as well as the guest ranch industry nationwide. You can still see many century-old original structures on the dude ranch, including the Meadowlark guest cabin, corrals and barns. Lone Mountain also flaunts exclusive Northern Rocky Mountain cuisine delicacies such as elk chops.

If you want to head to Montana this winter and rough things up a little, the Winter Discovery Package at Lone Mountain Ranch will cost you $2,300 per week per adult. For this price, you’ll get the following perks:

  • A choice between cabins and rooms in Ridgetop Lodge
  • Access to Nordic trails and snowshoe trails
  • Sleigh ride dinner
  • Ski and snowshoe rental
  • Gourmet BBQ trail lunch between January and March
  • Evening programs at the Ranch saloon For a little extra, you can add other things to this list, including Yellowstone Park snowcoach tours, ski lessons, and massage therapy.

#3) Big Bar Guest Ranch Six hours away from Vancouver and nestled in the Marble Range of the Southern Cariboo in British Columbia, Big Bar Guest Ranch is the perfect place to experience rustic living just like the cowboys. Its main attraction is the Harrison House, which was built on the land in 1936. On the inside, it welcomes guests to relax and enjoy the warmth of a fireplace built with rocks from the Fraser River. Surrounding the house is an extensive lawn where you can play soccer, badminton or even horseshoes. After a long day, you’re welcome at the communal dining room where you can enjoy authentic ranch delicacies in hearty portions. Now if you plan to head to Big Bar Guest Ranch during the colder season, be prepared to be welcomed by plenty of snowfall. The serenity of the area combined with the cozy atmosphere inside the cabins will make you forget your worries back home. You can also visit the nearby pond to skate, go ice fishing, or explore the surrounding country either on skis, snowshoes or even horseback. Currently, the winter rates are $150 per night for cabins, $25 per stay for the ski pass, and $65 per person for each ride. One thing you should know is that the dude ranch’s restaurant will be closed, so you’ll be cooking your meals in your cabin’s fully equipped kitchen. However, if you plan to be at the ranch during Christmas, you can celebrate with a traditional meal with the ranchers and other guests for an additional fee.

Discover Western Hospitality at the Grand Canyon

If you want to wake up to the delicious smells of an authentic cowboy breakfast, explore on horseback the marvels of the Grand Canyon, and go boot stompin’ in the evening, Bar 10 Ranch is where you should be. The working cattle ranch is just nine miles from the Grand Canyon in one of the remotest areas in the west, allowing you to truly leave behind the city life and enjoy the simple life the Wild West became famous for.

History of Bar 10 Ranch

Bar 10 Ranch has been the home of five generations of the Heaton family, starting from Tony Heaton and his wife Ruby. The founding couple expanded their little home by purchasing nearby small ranches over the years. Today, Bar 10 is stretched over 10,000 deeded acres and continues being built by Tony and Ruby’s six children and their own little cowboys and cowgirls. However, it was Tony himself who turned the ranch house into a travel destination. Realizing that most river rafters traveling down the Colorado River would have had their fill of the cold water and sun, he offered rafting companies and their clients the chance to stop by his ranch. There, they could include a visit to the Grand Canyon to their vacation itinerary and later use his ranch’s airstrip (nicknames as Whitmore International Airport) to travel back to Las Vegas.

Why 13,000 Visitors Drop by the Bar 10 Ranch

From 125 visitors in the 1980s to over 13,000 in the 2000s, Bar 10 Ranch has become a popular destination on the Arizona Strip. In addition to authentic western hospitality, the following factors make it one of the excellent dude ranches to stay at: Two Accommodation Options for Varying Tastes You can choose between staying at the Lodge or in one of the ranch’s 13 Conestoga Wagons. Built in 1983, the Lodge boasts an Old West theme through small details such as wagon wheel chandeliers and wood beams. The building overlooks the Grand Canyon and offers you a full view of lush surrounding lawns. On the other hand, the covered wagons come with double mattresses, electric lanterns, and a bench seat. These promise visitors a peek into the lifestyles of cowboys and early settlers.
