FULL DESCRIPTION OF LISTING
A great vacation for families, couples and singles! The days begin with breakfast cooked outside and served in the lodge. Guests can help saddle the horses and prepare for the morning ride, which might be a trailride or a cattle drive. Trails have beautiful scenery, winding through meadows, then up through dense forests and canyons, and on up to mountain trails and wind-swept ridges...giving a variety of terrain to ride in and offering spectacular views of the surrounding valleys and the distant Teton Peaks.
Cattle drives take place throughout the week, moving some of the 200 head of cattle and calves to different pastures, or into the corral. Guests have fun learning to rope. Canoeing on the lake and fishing, hiking, or relaxing in the hammocks and watching the leaves of the Quaken Aspens dance in the breeze are some of the other activities on the ranch. Learning how to do leatherwork is a favorite activity for some.
Dinner is usually cooked and eaten around the campfire at the close of day. It's a great time to visit about the day, enjoy the stars in the heavens, listen to the coyotes howl, and possibly join in on some campfire songs.
Nearby off-ranch activities are many: Yellowstone National Park in Montana, Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming, shopping in Idaho Falls, Idaho, swimming at historic Heise Hot springs, with cool and naturally hot pools and a scenic 9-hole golf course, Western dinner show and wagon ride at Mountain River Ranch, exciting Whitewater float trips, guided fishing/float trips down the famed South Fork of the Snake River, Palisades Dam and reservoir, Yellowstone Bear World - a new attration to the West - is a drive-through bear and wolf park. All these and more are within a 2-hour radius of the ranch.
Sometimes kittens and puppies are available for children to play with, along with calves that need to be bottle-fed. The old-time barn with a hay loft is a favorite place for kids to play.
Granite Creek is one of the most scenic cattle ranches in the West. It's located in a beautiful agricultural, yet mountainous corner of Idaho, and nestled at the base of Streeper Mountain. The cluster of buildings is situated by the reservoir which is fed by a small, clear creek which runs by the cabins, barn and corrals, and is surrounded by 4000 acres of timber, rangeland and farmland. It sits back off the main road a few miles and borders Caribou National Forest on the south.
Buildings are rustic ranch style, most of them built around the 1900's by the original homesteaders who used logs from the pine forests. Electricity and bathrooms have been added, making the cabins very cozy and comfortable. The guest ranch is operated in conjunction with the working cattle ranch and farm.
Wildlife is often seen on the ranch...moose, elk, deer and coyotes, along with smaller animals like skunk, beaver, porcupines and many birds. The entire ranch experience gives the feeling of going back in time and being a part of the "Old West".
