FULL DESCRIPTION OF LISTING
Howard Creek Ranch, a registered historic site, is a 60-acre oceanfront farm bordered by miles of beach and mountains; just south of the 60-mile long "Lost Coast", the Sinkyone Wilderness.
The ranch offers farm animals, flower gardens, fireplaces/woodstoves, a 75-foot long swinging foot bridge over Howard Creek, plus hot tubs and a sauna. Accommodations include cabins, suites and rooms, all different, but all furnished with antiques, large comfortable beds, handmade quilts or comforters, and views of the mountains, ocean, creek, and/or gardens. Some accommodate pets by prior arrangement only. Most are designed for two persons only. Please visit the home page for pictures and detailed descriptions of each room. Most rooms have kitchenettes and some have VCRs with TV screens. We also provide wireless internet access, and of course, a phone is available for your use.
A full ranch breakfast is included in your stay. All reservations are made over the telephone and not by email. We are a farm stay and as such differ from your ordinary hotel experience. www.howardcreekranch.com will give you detailed directions to our ranch, plus pages of photos including local elk, beach shots, many pictures of animals and flowers, and historical pictures on our History Section.
We are located on the beach (well, not on the sand, that would be dangerous) 180 miles north of San Francisco on Highway 1, a spectacular scenic drive. We are about 2.5 hours south of Eureka. Our website has a full page devoted to things to do in the area including visiting redwoods (some onsite via trails); going horseback riding on the beach or in the mountains (both novices and skilled riders accommodated); taking a ride on the famous Skunk Train for a 3 1/2 hour round trip train ride, viewing whales from the beach or from a deep sea fishing boat, or going deep sea fishing from Noyo Harbour; enjoying a German deep massage (gentleness is always appropriate); tasting wine at our local coastal winery (the Pacific Star Winery) just south of Westport and once served in the White House during the ninties) or tasting wines in Anderson Valley on your way here or on your way home. We have a multitude of brochures to help you plan your day.
And for those who want to do nothing, there is always a beach towel and umbrellas for a day of laying on the sand. Then of course, we have some of the finest dining anywhere in the world on the Mendocino Coast. We have collected all of the menus so that you may decide in our living room and make your reservations in comfort. We also have two new local restaurants opening in the summer of 2008, The DeHaven Valley Farm and the yet to be named new restaurant and bar in Westport, three miles south of us. Last but not least there are numerous shops, galleries, and plant nurseries on the coast.
If you like to hike this is the place for you. We have onsite trails and are almost surrounded by wilderness areas with miles and miles of trails.
When you visit our home page, www.howardcreekranch.com, please look at the History Section. We were built in 1871 and have done all of the restoration ourselves, milling the redwood lumber onsite in addition to dismantling unwanted (unfortunately) old buildings and reusing the materials from the past. We are not yet finished. It seems to be a never ending project. We don't make noise when it would disturb you, so that limits my husband greatly, but it does make for a peaceful stay for you. So do not be surprised to see a barn undergoing reconstruction.
Last, but not least, we are three miles north of Westport, a sleepy, friendly little village, with a deli/grocery store/gas station/post office all in one and a local crafts and artist's gallery . The building styles are mostly from the late 1880s and fashioned after those on the coast of Maine, where many early settlers orignated. The town has an active population who come together and give barbeques and other fund rasiers for our volunteer fire department, church, and village society. The society recently received a grant and purchased the village headland bluffs facing the ocean with a small cove beach which is accessed via a long, sturdy wooden stairway. On Mother's Day we have an annual Rubber Ducky Race. Bring your rubber ducky and race it on Wages Creek to win glory and prizes.
Our Suites, rooms ,and cabins feature large comfortable beds with handmade quilts, private decks/balconies, skylights, and fireplaces/woodstoves.
A full ranch breakfast is served. Our menu changes daily. Tea available anytime.
