Laughing Water Ranch encompasses 220 beautiful acres of mountain timber and rolling pasture. Nestled in a beautiful mountain valley just west of Glacier National Park and bordered on three sides by the Kootenai National Forest, the ranch has a wonderful trail system for scenic and challenging horseback rides. Colorful names such as the “Trail of Tears,” “Laughing Water Overlook,” and the “North Fork of Deep Creek Trail” will become part of your memory book. As you visit nearby lakes and take lunch next to a babbling brook or scenic vista, you probably won’t see any other riders, since Laughing Water is the only dude ranch in the area.

Sitting at an elevation of 3,200 feet at the lodge and 7,500 feet at the peaks, you are likely to see deer, elk and maybe bear on your outdoor adventures. At Laughing Water Ranch you will become familiar with the reaches of Laughing Water Creek, the majestic heights of Mount Marston, Mount Fir, and Baldy Mountain as well as the remote beauty and stillness of Martin Lake.

The ranch is located only 20 miles from Canada and 40 miles west of Glacier National Park. The ranch property has been in the Mikita family for 30 years. Originally a wild Christmas tree ranch it began operating as a dude ranch in 1988 using it’s ranch house as a lodge. The old barn and homestead cabin are from the 1930's. In 1996 construction of 4 more log cabins brought capacity up to 32. The owners’ son Ted Jr. took over the reins of the ranch in 1996 and ran a professional, family-oriented guest operation. He added “Fort Laramie”, the 7-room miniature stockade complete with tack room and shooting range for the older kids program, and the "Kamp Kootenai" tepee village for the younger ones.

Our children's programs are adventures in themselves. Youngsters between 4 and 8 participate in an exciting discovery of the curiosities in the Native American way of life. Led by an authentic Cheyenne princess "Falcon Mother", kids participate in nature walks, crafts, learn Cheyenne words, dances and stories. One night is spent camping in the tepees. And yes, horses are involved in the program.

Older kids aged 9 through 14 become part of the Laughing Water Troop of the U. S. 7th Cavalry! Blue uniforms, yellow bandanas and army hats flanked by the swirling colors of the Cavalry and U.S. flags make for a stirring site as the kids ride up over the hill to our own Fort Laramie frontier outpost. Kids learn to ride, shoot, and defend the Fort from Indian attack. They camp out in the Fort one night during the week. The adventure is capped by a pow-wow with the Cheyenne Indians and their own horse show of cavalry maneuvers at the end of the week.

The staff consists of local, long-time workers of the ranch who love to share stories of Montana and of the horses. The food is wonderfully delicious ranch and home-style cooking. Advantage is taken of the beautiful summer weather with numerous outdoor barbeques and lunches on the trail. We welcome vegetarians and others with special diet concerns.

In May and September the ranch advertises Cattle Drives, Adults Only and Singles Weeks, a pared down version of our summer program at rock-bottom prices! Visit our website at www.ranchatlw.com to view pictures and explore our vacation in detail. Or call 406-270-7200 for a brochure.
